What is teeth grinding?

Teeth grinding (Bruxism) is the sliding of the teeth against each other. This isn’t the same as clenching teeth. With teeth clamping, the teeth do not slide on each other, but only pressure is put on them.

Long-term teeth grinding can lead to tooth loosening or loss.

Causes

Some causes of teeth grinding are:

  • Sleep disorder;
  • Stress;
  • Alcohol or drug use;
  • Smoking;
  • Use of medicin.

  • Pain in jaw;
  • Disturbed sleep;
  • Worn teeth.

Teeth grinding solutions

Bite plate

A bite plate can offer a solution to prevent tooth wear. The dentist can provide a bite plate.

Botox

Depending on the complaints, botox can offer a solution for teeth grinding. The dentist injects botox into the jaw muscle.

This temporarily stops the transmission of nerves to the muscle. This relaxes the jaw muscle and reduces teeth grinding.

Do you suffer from teeth grinding? Then visit your dentist to see which solution is the best for you.

Oral Hygiene

Healthy teeth start at the base. Brush your teeth at least twice a day to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Brush/floss between teeth is recommended once a day to remove food particles that you cannot reach with the toothbrush.

When brushing or flossing is not done in the right way, the help of a prevention assistant may be necessary. They can show you how to brush and floss your teeth in the right way.

The prevention assistant

Within our team we have several prevention assistants who can prevent dental problems. They do this by means of brushing instructions, floss instructions, cleaning your teeth, polishing the teeth, giving advice on the right toothbrush, etcetera. Dental plaque and tartar Once food remains between your teeth, it can develop into plaque or even tartar. It is not possible to remove tartar with just brushing your teeth. The prevention assistant performs the dental cleaning with hand instruments or with our EMS system. This removes tartar. If tartar persists for a longer period of time, the tartar can damage the tooth, for example creating a cavity. In short, a visit to the prevention assistant or dental hygienist is necessary to prevent dental problems and to maintain a beautiful smile.
